Murder On The Orient Express

Pioneer Theatre Company, 2023

“The attention to detail in the costumes is marvelous, and Phillip R. Lowe (Costume Design) spared no expense in ensuring that every aspect of the clothing is flawless. From tailored suits to elegant dresses, every piece of the wardrobe perfectly captures the time period and the characters. With so many distinct personalities, accurately representing them through clothing, hair, and makeup is vitally important. Lowe and Tami Lee Thompson (Hair & Makeup Designer) do this with fashionable aplomb.” - Front Row Reviewers

“I’ve rarely seen such an opulent set as this, and gratifyingly, the other production values are just as sumptuous. The lighting by Jaymi Lee Smith, as I mentioned, is quite dramatic, with bold washes of color depending on the mood, and the mountain range in the background lit in blues and purples. The costumes, by Phillip R. Lowe, are exquisite and perfectly represent early 1930’s style. For example, there is one female character that wears pants, and the piece is set during the period of time when trousers for women were beginning to be accepted. Though in 1933, just a year before the show is set, Marlene Dietrich was turned away from a Hollywood restaurant for wearing the controversial garment. The hair and makeup design, supervised by Tami Lee Thompson, is sophisticated and just right for the period.” - Gephardt Daily

“Jason Simms’ scenic design of a functioning railway coach is masterful, along with a beautifully draped, luxurious period-perfect wardrobe by the company’s resident costume designer Phillip R. Lowe. (In a dream world, my home’s closet would be suddenly complete by Lowe’s fine tailorings.)” - Q Salt Lake

“The production team manifests all of the right notes in Ludwig’s adaptation.” - The Utah Review
